I’m in STEM and I’m sorry your daughter had this humiliating experience. She sounds like a gifted scientist who deserves a lot more respect than she got. However, this kind of thing is very much entrenched in the culture and I don’t see it going away anytime soon given that this behavior is also common in narcissists of all genders. It is important to develop counter strategies or it truly can be hell.

I took theater and improv as part of my training after I had some humiliating experiences like you describe. Some of the biggest bullies get intimidated when you can turn a nasty comment into a joke at there expense, plus attendance goes way up on your talks so long as the science is really good too. It is something that has helped me keep things positive.
